If you haven’t heard, we’re celebrating the new year with an Art & Soul sale. Each week, for the next few months, we will feature an instructor and the classes they will be teaching at upcoming events. During that week only, if you sign up for one of their classes you will receive a 20% discount on the total cost of the class. This is a great opportunity to try a new instructor, delve into a technique that might appeal to you, or just venture out of that “comfortable art” box. Register for the class online, as usual, and we will credit your account, accordingly. This week our featured instructor is Stephanie Rubiano. She’s teaching three classes in Vegas, all of which look very exciting, can’t wait.

Deadline for registration is Friday, January 1st. Available for new class registration only. Not acceptable to transfer from previously registered class in order to receive discount.

Perching Pixies

Stephanie Rubiano

Stephanie is a mixed-media artist who creates dimensional works within shadow boxes, using a variety of uncommon objects. Her love of nature and fascination with Victorian photography is apparent through her combination of antique photographs and real butterfly or moth wings. Bits of text illustrate her irreverence for straight-laced Victorian society and lend a whimsical air to her pieces. Stephanie’s inner science geek is assuaged by her writing the scientific name of each butterfly or moth specimen on the back of the box next to her signature.

Stephanie teaches sold-out workshops at national art retreats and has had work in past mediums shown in galleries and boutiques across the United States.  She is an emerging artist on the art festival scene. In October of 2008 she participated in her first nationally-ranked art festival, the Bayou City Art Festival in Houston, TX and placed 2ndoverall out of 300 national artists. Her work has graced the covers of magazines and books, as well as been the subject of articles and how-to projects.

Life Is But A Dream

Julie Haymaker Thompson

The first week, beginning Friday, December 18 through Christmas Day, Dec 25, we’re featuring a new instructor to our Art & Soul family. Julie Haymaker Thompson’s professional background is in illustration. She has 30 years experience as a freelance artist and as an  “in house artist”  for Hallmark Cards inc.  Julie also has professional training in fine metal smithing. With this experience, she loves the process of adding detail to her work. Her approach to her artwork has always been whimsical in design with the element of sophistication in finishing techniques. Julie has two classes, In Dreams and Life is But A Dream for Las Vegas and they both look like a lot of fun. Julie is certain to become a most sought after instructor for our events!

In Dreams

Wow! Having the Wonderland theme for 2010 is really going to be a hoot. Jill Haglund of Tweety Jill http://www.tweetyjill.com has an entire Alice product line and it is amazing.  Here are some samples of the collage sheets.  Can’t you just see using these in our artwork for the event??!!

Excitement is building as we introduce the guidelines for a pocket skirt contest.  Most of you know that this contest has evolved due to the skirt worn in Portland by Abby Ross. It was a fabulous garment and sent many of us to altering heaven!  We have decided to have a contest, a fashion show and a tea party!  Sound like fun??  Vegas will kick off our fashion show and Tea Party – the perfect location for altered skirts on a runway. Here are the details:

We are going to have a Pocket Skirt Fashion Show, Contest and Tea prior to Vendor Night on Saturday in Vegas. All the art girls in Wonderland need a new pocket skirt to wear on their multitude of adventures! Where else can they store their stamps, pencils, trades, and ideas? Won’t you help them out? Your creations will be entered in our fabulous Wonderland contest and will walk the runway to the oohs and aahs of the crowd. The requirements are few: skirt must have at least one pocket and must be able to be worn down the runway.
